Russell Butler is of the Warrgamay/Bandjin people of the Herber River and Hinchinbrook Island region of Queensland. Born in 1948, he was taught the skills of shield, spear, stone axe and fish hook making and painting by his grandmother. He is represented in the permanent collection of the Museum of Tropical Queensland and was a featured artist in the 2001 “Gatherings, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art From Queensland Australia” exhibition in Brisbane. His artist statement from the catalogue reads, “I went to two schools – mainstream school and my grandmother’s school … now it’s my job to teach my sons, to pass on that knowledge and keep those skills and traditions alive.”
