Sera Waters was born in 1979 in Murray Bridge, South Australia. In 2000 she graduated from the South Australian School of Art, and in 2006 she completed a
Masters degree in Art History at the University of Adelaide. She is an Adelaide-based artist, writer, and lecturer. In 2006 Waters was awarded the Ruth Tuck Scholarship to attend the Royal School of Needlework (Hampton Court Palace, England) to study hand embroidery. It was here that she learned about the meticulous, traditional technique of Black Work, which
has been highly influential on her practice ever since. She is particularly interested in colonial Australian history, using her own family history as starting point of reference.
