Born in 1949 of the Indjilanji/Alyewarre language group of North West Queensland, Shirley MacNamara’s watercolours and sculptures were inspired by the clashes and interactions between Aboriginal people and the cattle industry. MacNamara also weaves vessels from spinifex and it is this media that was featured in the 2001 Brisbane exhibition “Gatherings, Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art from Queensland, Australia”. Her spinifex vessels are in the permanent collections of the Campbelltown Arts Centre, Queensland Art Gallery and the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville.
