painter, teacher and clergyman, came to New Zealand in 1843 to teach at St John’s Anglican College, Auckland. Ordained deacon in 1847, Hutton married Sarah Williams two years later; he was priested in 1853. Hutton had sketched on the voyage to New Zealand and he continued this activity throughout his life. Some of his drawings were among those used by Rev. W.C. Cotton to illustrate his journals (Mitchell Library [ML]). Queensland views attributed to him (ML) are dated 1858, when he must have visited Brisbane and the Darling Downs. They include Clifton Plain-Darling Downs. Moreton Bay. Australia and Blue Gum Tree. Mt. Marshall Cunninghams Gap – Saddle Hill Darling Downs. Moreton Bay NSW . Initialled works include St. Matthew’s Church and Parsonage Drayton. Darling Downs July 1858 and Panorama of the Bay of Islands. New Zealand (1861).
