State trained at RMIT and began his professional career in 1956. He designed commercials for TV, later forming an association with director Fred Schepisi for graphic services. He also designed 2 feature-length animated films. Since 1990, he has been in partnership with Paddy Stitt, editor and co-author of Stitt Autobiographics.
