Colin Barrie was the Foundation Director of the Industrial Design Council of Australia (IDCA), later becoming the Head of the School of Art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1969. In 1977, Barrie was appointed the Foundation Dean of the Faculty of Art, RMIT. He graduated in Industrial Design from RMIT in 1951 under the Rehabilitation Training Scheme following the 1939-45 War and spent a decade in design and production in the manufacturing industry. He was a noted author and educator. Most recently he was a lecturer in Liberal Studies at La Trobe University, Mildura Campus, 1993-1995. The Colin Barrie Acquisition Award, Mildura is named in his honour.
