Hammerstein opened an interior design practice in New York in the early 1930s working as Dorothy Hammerstein Inc. After practicing across the United States, she retired in the mid-1950s. She also worked as an actress/singer in the USA and later married Oscar Hammerstein, the composer in 1929.
