McGrath was awarded the first ever Art Diploma (Sculpture Honours), at East Sydney Technical College. She studied under Raynor Hoff, who described her student work as "exceptionally brilliant." She left Australia in 1933, studying and teaching in England and Europe before finally settling in Washington with her husband.
