Towell studied at the Southern College of Art, Bournemouth, UK, later worked as display designer UK stores, then as designer for Taubmans Australia, typography teacher East Sydney Technical College, and a designer for the Commonwealth Dept of Trade. He was a founding member of the Society of Designers for Industry, NSW chapter.
