Herbst was a designer for Prestige (Fabrics) Limited, an illustrator and later principal lecturer at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in industrial design, graphics. In 1967, the course also included Wilby Rackham as lecturer and three tutors. Herbst retired in 1975.
