De Gruchy was a trained economist who established a design studio in Brisbane after immigrating from the UK. Her outlet, "Craftsman's Market", Toowong sold design goods. In the 1970s, she began supplying interior design services, later serving on the Crafts Board of the Australia Council. She and her husband Graham established the Darnell-de Gruchy Art Prize, University of Queensland.
