Costume and Production Designer
A graduate of East Sydney College with a Certificate in Fashion in 1977, Margot is one of Australia’s most talented production and costume designers. She is best known for her meticulous and beautiful costume design for John Hillcoat’s film The Proposition, for which she won an Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award in 2006, and for Terrence Malick’s Oscar-nominated WWII epic, The Thin Red Line. Margot has also received AFI Award nominations for best costume design for Bran Nue Dae, Lantana and La Spagnola. Margot is currently working on Hillcoat’s new feature, The Wettest Country in the World.
Some of Margot’s fondest memories of her time at Sydney Institute are of:
“…the fun we had working towards the fashion parades at the end of the year. We were able to take so many varied subjects and this parade gave us the opportunity to exercise the skills we had learnt.
“The teachers were a great support no matter how wacky your ideas were. They…helped make it a reality. Sydney Institute is such a great training ground. All the different subjects I studied over the four years gave me skills that can be called upon in my day-to-day work in the film industry.
“Being involved in Sydney Institute’s 120 years anniversary is important [to me]. People need opportunities to follow their passions. Passions never die and Sydney Institute’s longevity speaks for itself.
