Mari Velonaki is an interactive installation artist and scholar based in Sydney. Throughout her career Velonaki has worked collaboratively with scientific groups in order to advance her research and artistic practice. Since 1995 her projects have included interactive installations which feature sensory triggered interfaces with digital characters that evolve and become active in response to audience interaction. One such work,'Embracement’ (2003), was created in collaboration with roboticists Dave Rye and Steve Scheding and exhibited at 'Perceptual Difference’ at the 2004 Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth (BEAP). Velonaki has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, and has been the recipient of several grants and awards. In 2003 she completed a PhD in Experimental interfaces at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW in Sydney. In 2006 she co-founded the Centre for Social Robotics within the Australian Centre for Field Robotics, University of Sydney with David Rye. In 2012 she joined the National Institute of Experimental Arts at the College of Fine Arts as Associate Professor and Director, Creative Robotics Lab.
