botanist, painter and teacher, was a pioneer in propagating the waratah as heraldic emblem. See his Australian Flora in Applied Art: The Waratah , Sydney, 1915. Art master, Newington College to 1888; assistant curator of Botany, Sydney Technical Museum 1888-98; curator and Government Economic Botanist 1898-1921.
