Mervyn Officer is described as a commercial artist in an 1941 obituary for his father, the Secretary of the Victorian Graziers Association. He was a student at the National Gallery School (1926, also illustrated theatre programmes (1926). By 1931, he was exhibiting landscape works at Tavistock House and abstract works at the Athenaeum Gallery in 1932.
