Frater's career began with an apprenticeship in glass design in Scotland. He arrived in Melbourne 1910, worked with Brooks, Robinson and Co. in glass, later with E.L. Yencken, Melbourne. Best known as a figurative painter following training at the George Bell School, Melbourne. Elected President of the Victorian Artists Society.
