Salmon trained initially in graphic arts at Swinburne Technical College and worked as a designer at Prestige (fabrics) Limited, a sophisticated Victorian textile firm. He later trained in the UK and Italy settling as a figurative landscape painter. He had an extensive teaching career in SA and NSW. Salmon also took up broadcasting after 1963 and produced several films for the ABC.
