Douglas Cowell

Cowell was the supervisor of the interior design department of Bebarfalds. In the 1930s, the furniture department provided interior sketch plans & ground plans for interiors. They also published a residential design book, "Safe Home Planning" in 1927, produced a "Colour Ensemble Furnishing Chart" and hosted a household advice 2KY radio programme. In 1938, the designer was a director of a Sydney decorating firm Bear & Co.

A illustrated profile in Decoration and Glass 1 August 1935, p.24 describes the designer as “a prominent Sydney designer of modern furniture and specialist in interior decoration”. He had “overseas” experience in 1928 through travel in the USA and Europe, returning to work with Bebarfalds Limited. His work included residential, hotels and restaurants. By 1938, he was an executive with the interior design firm, Bear and Co. York Street, Sydney, a company associated with Paul Bear. Bear and Co. were notably active in the 1930s.
