A student at the Berlin Academy of Art under German Impressionist Max Liebermann, Blumann fled Nazi Germany in 1938, she and her husband settling in Perth. An advocate of boundary pushing when it came to modern art, Blumann became an important conduit for modernist ideas and attitudes for the Perth Art Group, which she helped found in 1942. Furniture by the artist is also known.

Description

Exhibition showcasing highlights from the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art (CCWA), which was gifted to the University of Western Australia in 2007. A companion publication titled 'Into the Light’ that documented the history and key works of the CCWA was released to coincide with the exhibition, which also featured a symposium – 'Are we there yet?’ – discussing women’s participation in art and art history and the future of feminism in the arts.

Description

Elise Bluman left Germany in 1934 to escape the Nazi regime, finally settling in Perth in 1938. Over the following years she brought a specific and well informed viewpoint on European modernism to the development of contemporary art in WA. This retrospective exhibition of her work was organised by the Centre for Fine Arts, University of WA, with the assistance of the Visual Arts Board.
