Sculptor, born Victoria and trained at the National Gallery School, Melbourne. He was a foundation member of the Yarra Sculptors Society. His terracotta Head of Bacchus 1899 was shown in the Society’s second annual exhibition in 1899-1900, cat. 134 (offered Sotheby’s Melbourne 30 April 2002, lot 133, est. $3,000-4,000), along with the marble bust of a woman – his favourite model Mabel Annette Woodcock, whom he married on 7 May 1917 (lot 134, col. Ill. est. $7,000-9,000). A bronze version of the latter, dated 1916, is in the McCllelland Gallery, Langwarrin, Victoria.
Gilbert died in Melbourne in 1925, just before the unveiling of his “Matthew Flinders” sculpture, which is now displayed outside St. Paul’s Cathedral.
