An initiative of the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Foundation, the award honours the philanthropy of Win Schubert AO (1937-2017) and her extraordinary generosity as a lifelong custodian of Australian photography, art and creativity. It is now also the biggest award in photography for Queensland and second in Australia, acting as a touchstone for contemporary photographic practice nationwide. The award is intentionally left open and not narrowed by theme, encouraging entries from both emerging and established photographers and artists.

“Susanna Castleden was picked from a field of 19 West Australian artists to win the $30,000 2013 Bankwest Art Prize at a ceremony held at Bankwest Place. This year’s judges – Ian Potter Museum of Art director Kelly Gellatly, Art on the Move executive director Paul Thompson and Art Curator for Bankwest Sandra Murray – described the winning work as “the quintessential experience of Australian childhood; camping and caravanning”. The exhibition will remain open to the public until 3 March 2014.” SMH, November 28, 2013.
